Guiding Aspiring University Athletes to Success:

Here's a simplified three-year process map developed by Ascent Youth Coaching for a youth athlete aiming to play volleyball at the university level:

Year 1: Foundation Building

  •     Identify Goals and Commitment: Set the goal of playing volleyball at the university level. Assess your commitment, strengths, and areas for improvement.

  •     Skill Assessment: Evaluate your current volleyball skills and identify strengths and weaknesses. Seek feedback from coaches and mentors.

  •     Structured Training: Enroll in a structured training program that focuses on fundamental skills, agility, and strength conditioning.

  •     Join Club or School Team: Join a local club or school volleyball team to gain consistent playing experience and exposure to competitive environments.

  •     Mental Conditioning: Begin working on mental skills such as focus, confidence, and resilience. Explore mindfulness techniques to manage pressure.

Year 2: Skill Refinement and Exposure

  •     Advanced Skill Development: Engage in specialized training to enhance specific volleyball skills, including serving, spiking, blocking, and setting.

  •     High-Performance Competitions: Participate in regional and national level tournaments to gain exposure, compete against strong opponents, and showcase your talent.

  •     Recruitment Research: Research universities with strong volleyball programs that align with your academic interests. Understand their recruitment processes.

  •     Academic Excellence: Maintain strong academic performance, as universities often look for well-rounded athletes.

  •     Network Building: Attend volleyball camps, showcase events, and connect with coaches and players to expand your network within the volleyball community.

Year 3: Recruitment and Decision

  •     Create Highlight Reel: Compile highlights from your matches to create an impressive recruitment video that showcases your skills and versatility.

  •     Contact Coaches: Reach out to university volleyball coaches, expressing your interest in their program and providing your highlight reel.

  •     Campus Visits: Attend university volleyball camps and official visits to experience the campus environment, meet coaches, and understand team dynamics.

  •     Scholarship and Offers: Evaluate scholarship offers and opportunities from different universities. Consider factors like coaching staff, team culture, and academic programs.

  •     Decision Time: Make an informed decision based on the fit between your athletic and academic goals, as well as the university's volleyball program and overall environment.

  •     Preparation for University: If accepted, prepare for the transition to university-level volleyball. Continue physical training, mental conditioning, and skill development.
